I know you all remember the iconic (to me) part of the Homegoing book where Marjorie hands Marcus the black stone pendant. That’s exactly what my visual is about. A picture of both characters and how I visualized them to be in my mind.

I chose to bring this imagery to life because, in my opinion, this was a powerful point in the book, especially with it being the last chapter. Two half-sister's descendants unknowingly come together and unite. To me, this signifies family unity and shows how families can almost always come back in the afterlife and inevitably be together again. This visual was inspirational to me in a way because even though Marjorie didn’t know for sure, she gave Marcus an important family heirloom that meant the world to her. This shows how Marjorie considers Marcus to be family.

The image shows both Marjorie and Marcus in the waters of Edweso, hugging each other whilst Marcus holds the black stone pendant. I chose to have them both in the water to show how they both helped each other get over their fears, specifically Marcus’s water phobia. The black stone pendant is included as unity between the two families as well. The hug is also significant to the image because I visualized the spirits of both Effia and Esi coming together as one after previously being so far apart from one another. This was a very touching moment for me and that is why I chose to make it into a real-life image.

Marcus’s chapter in the book Homegoing really stuck with me as families who lost lineage with each other come back together again eventually. Both are oblivious to the fact, that the family heirloom is still in the family because both Marcus and Marjorie are distant cousins. I put the sentimental moment into an image that I think all of us can enjoy.
